TMI Award Winners

The AOK Division was very well represented at TMI! We sent 41 people to serve as delegates and staff. The people from AOK modeled what it means to be a musician and creative artist in The Salvation Army. We are very proud of all who attended, and are looking forward to seeing what God has in store for them as they continue to grow in their art and in their faith.

We came home with a great many awards and scholarships! The full list is below. We are very proud of these young people!

Major Lloyd W. Scott has been described as "America's Premier Salvationist Melodist." a phrase that accurately reflects the lyrical nature of his compositions which have blessed Salvationists throughout the world. This memorial scholarship was estab… — Major Lloyd W. Scott has been described as "America's Premier Salvationist Melodist." a phrase that accurately reflects the lyrical nature of his compositions which have blessed Salvationists throughout the world. This memorial scholarship was established by Major Scott's daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Philip Smith, upon his promotion to glory in 2003. It is awarded on the basis of exemplary Salvationism and outstanding musicianship, to encourage and develop the next generation os Salvationist composers. The award alternates each year between the Southern and Eastern Territories and provides full tuition and travel expenses to attend the biennial National Composers Forum.

Walter Swyers established this scholarship in memory of his great interest in Salvation Army band, upon his promotion to glory in 2002. It was awarded in person at TMI the next year to the outstanding brass musician by his wife, Lt. Colonel Anne G. Swyers. Upon her promotion to glory in 2005, the family established the 2nd Swyers scholarship, to be awarded in her memory. The TMI awards committee chooses one male and one female recipient (ages 18 and under) for these scholarships. The scholarships provides for next year's tuition fee.

Th… — Colonel Douglas Norris was a noted Central Territory officer and music enthusiast who served as bandmaster of the Chicago Staff Band and was a founding member of the Central Music Institute. Colonel Norris Spent his retirement years in the South. The scholarship to honor his memory is awarded to a TMI delegate at least 18 years of age for exemplary Salvationism and outstanding musicianship and provides travel and tuition feels to attend next year's Central Music Institute.

Commissioner Ruby W. Holz was the wife of Commissioner Richard E. Holz and together they served as territorial leaders of the USA Western and Central Territories. Mrs. Holz was the mother of Commissioner Keith Needham, and sons Richard, Robert, and … — Commissioner Ruby W. Holz was the wife of Commissioner Richard E. Holz and together they served as territorial leaders of the USA Western and Central Territories. Mrs. Holz was the mother of Commissioner Keith Needham, and sons Richard, Robert, and Ronald Holz. Throughout her Salvation Army officership, Mrs. Holz could often be seen serving faithfully at the piano. Upon her promotion to glory in 2003, her children established the Commissioner Ruby W. Holz Piano Scholarship to encourage and train the next generation of Salvationist keyboard players. The scholarship provides full tuition and travel expenses to return to TMI next year as a piano major.

He set up the computer system for The Salvation Army in the Carolinas Division and served as Bandmaster for the Charlotte Temple Cor… — Dick Bergren was a former delegate to TMI who served two tours of duty in Vietnam in the United States Marine Corps. He set up the computer system for The Salvation Army in the Carolinas Division and served as Bandmaster for the Charlotte Temple Corps and the Carolinas Divisional Band. His spirit lives on with those who knew his loyal friendship. The scholarship to music was established anonymously to recognize the outstanding delegate age 16 or younger who most exhibits the spirit of TMI. It provides for next year's tuition fee.
